Another old release finally gets a decent reissue. Is that really so hard, every old band I like?!!!

It's just digital, but I already have the vinyl and cassette, so nannynannybooboo to you. I actually just ripped the cassette recently, but this sounds a lot better. Now we just need the Drunk Injuns and Skatemaster Tate (rip) to get on the Beware Records reissue bandwagon. A very slow wagon indeed.

So Odd Man Out was Steve Caballero's band after The Faction dissolved. With him on guitar, they played a kind of dark, gothy, post punk style. I've never really heard the Mission UK, but apparently they were an influence. And maybe since their songs were featured in a Powell video and Savannah Slamma (with possibly the best contest run ever by Jeff Grosso, also rip), it's hard not to hear some old skate rock influences still coming through.

This definitely isn't a band you would automatically like if you liked The Faction, but I always thought they were really unique, and seemed to fit in with the gloomier direction of other old bands that stuck around, like TSOL, Agent Orange, 7 Seconds, etc.

You can find this reissue on sites like Amazon, iTunes, Deezer, Spotify, etc.Nealhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17658765719025589639noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2366865459447553502.post-10639334667229621352020-04-03T05:40:00.003+02:002020-04-03T05:58:10.010+02:00B.H.R. - Breaking In! (Signal Sound Systems, 1993)

B.H.R.? Yeah, I don't know much about them. If you like old Guttermouth though, you'll like them. They actually have a split 7" with Guttermouth. I've never really been a big fan of "the Mouth" as they're called (maybe?), but in my never ending quest to acquire rare albums by bands who sound like other bands, I tracked this down a few years ago. I wanted to have a series of posts by bands who sound a lot alike, like Verbal Assault/One Step Ahead, Dag Nasty/Freewill and Strung Out/Redfish. But that would involve posting more than once a year probably.

So with B.H.R. you can expect a similar sound to Guttermouth and maybe the Vandals. Fast, snotty and catchy, but not as hard as say Pennywise or as poppy as Blink 182. Don't expect much lyrically from songs like "Psycho Grandma," "Toxic Surf" and "Frozen Food," but if you dig the rougher side of the SoCal sound, or the early days of Dr. Strange, Nitro or Kung Fu Records, then this might be up your alley. Plus they do passable covers of "Anything" by Dramarama and "Police On My Back" by The Clash.

I know in times like this, the whole world looks to me to make sense of this topsy turvy situation and dish out some words of wisdom, hope and solace. But alas, gentile reader, these delicate fingers, for once, don't know what to type. Do not look to me for all the answers. We must find strength in ourselves, and each other. And drugs. Plenty of drugs.

So they can stop us from going outside, but like the Village People sang, nobody can stop the music.

Well, they could shut down the power grid and we'd be stuck with non electric shit like classical and folk music. A fate worse than Coronavirus!

So I just discovered Mundy's Bay via this song the other day. I've watched this video about 15 times already and sent it to a bunch of my friends, in lieu of asking if they're still alive. This is my kind of stuff. Hooky, dancey indie pop. And the chorus, with that slight keyboard flourish, is such an earworm.

The song is great, but it also makes me miss watching music videos. I guess they're going for a cable access/make-a-video-in-the-mall-machine kind of thing. And watching the drummer bounce along to the beat and the guitarist let loose around 1:59 makes me miss seeing live shows. I know it's only been a short while, but I go to a lot of shows. I had 6 shows lined up just until mid April that have been canceled.

But we can continue to bob our heads and dance in our houses to music like this for the time being. And when this is over, I expect you all to fill the music venues, dance clubs and karaoke nights of your cities and remember how music kept you sane during these ___ months. Years?

And keep taking drugs.

Hopefully this download makes up for my absence. (And hopefully Dischord doesn't take this down, since it is a very non-standard version.)

I feel like all of my posts begin with delay, absence, disappearance, abduction. The aliens returned me in perfect shape though. Bleep Blork.

So there are a few classic punk albums that were released in very alternate forms:
Bad Brains - Rock For Light: The original mix and the much more available Caroline mix, which was sped up.
Circle Jerks - Wild In The Streets: The original mix and the much more available Frontier mix, which was cleaned up a lot, to its detriment in a lot of people's opinion. Well, a lot of old farts' opinion.
Youth Of Today - We're Not In This Alone: 3 versions! The original mix, a "better" mix, but with the drums off and the version with the vocals and something else re-recorded years later. ("Classic" might be a stretch, but I've come to not just think of them as humorless jocks.)
Snuff - Reach: Alternate test press mix. (Yes, I will include Snuff!)

And that brings us to Minor Threat - Out Of Step. I bought both their tapes from Tape World or some mall shop after seeing Another State Of Mind. They were the standouts of the entire movie for me. I listened to those cassettes hundreds of millions of tens of times, often to the chagrin of my parents on long car rides. They were the perfect mix of musicianship, anger, melody, danger and 3 other things. I followed every band the members did after that. I tattooed their name on my forehead. Okay, not that one.

But I grew up with that cassette. And until recently I still threw it on in the car when I went home to visit my parents. I had since replaced it with the Discography CD, but Out Of Step is the highlight for me. Well at some point I noticed that the CD version of the songs didn't quite sound the same. Some different parts, not quite as punchy. What gives?

I only learned a few years ago that there were 2 mixes of Out Of Step. The original mix is on the CD. The remix is on the cassette version I have. I still don't understand it, since the original mix seems to have some weird effects that you would think would come later.

So I've started to digitize some rare cassettes I have, to mixed results. Some sound muddy. Some have annoying warble. But my old ass Out Of Step cassette, maybe my most played cassette ever, sounds great! Now, admittedly, if you don't listen to music on headphones, you might not notice much. But compared to the original mix on the CD and vinyl, I think this sounds brighter, the bass is punchy as fuck, and since it's from cassette, no annoying clicks and pops. I really can't believe that Dischord hasn't released both versions digitally. I'm sure lots of other people grew up with this version and I find it hard to believe that anyone would prefer the other.
I admit I'm not familiar with the Alan Parsons Project beyond "Eye In The Sky," which is a jam, and on the same album as this. But damn, this is a smooth ass, funky, electro, Italo Disco style banger.

So before I get back to posting some good downloads, here are a few videos with a commonality: the voice. I just heard Bragolin yesterday on the indie (actual) station. Who kind of reminded me of Teleman. Who kind of reminded me of Fischer Z. All in the post punk realm.

I got this album released. You're welcome!

So on a messageboard I frequent, someone posted an album on YouTube by a band called Squarehead. Apparently they had been looking for a different band with the same name and stumbled upon this iteration.

This Squarehead turned out to be a kindred spirit of bands like Leatherface, China Drum, Hooton 3 Car, etc. A few of us pop punk lovers on said board were obviously intrigued, and bewildered how we had never heard of them before. We then embarked on a mad internet dash to learn more about this mystery band.

Google turned up nothing. Faithful ol' Discogs turned up...20 bands with the same name. But I finally happened upon the right one, whose only entry was a cassette tape that made up the final 4 songs of the album on YouTube. Where did the other 4 songs come from (especially the first one)? Why isn't this on CD or vinyl or Soulseek???

Well, I then shared the YouTube find with the appropriate demographic, a music group dedicated to all things Leatherface. Surely they must know something.

Lo and behold, one of the members of Squarehead was either a fellow member or alerted to my post and gave us a little history on the band:

Some info on Squarehead… Based in and around Swindon we were going for a couple of years from '92 to 94. Line up was Dave Ganner - Vocals/Guitar, Fred - Drums, Nick Osman - Bass and myself on Guitar and occasional shouting. The album on youtube is the 2 demos we recorded in 92 and 93 . We didn't do a lot really, played about 30 gigs.. good uns with Rancid, Leatherface, and Guns n Wankers and some shit uns. Dave went on to play with Strain who were excellent and Fred is half of the brilliant 2 Sick Monkeys. I'll sort out a free download thingy for anyone who wants it. Thanks for all the nice words, I'm chuffed to fucking bits!

And as he promised, he shared the album on Bandcamp. Check out the first song and you Leatherface fans will be saying, "Come to papa!"

This entire tale also happened over the course of 4 days. My most satisfying Bandcamp experience since finding the Hunger Farm stuff.

6/24/2019: So the album is gone from Bandcamp for some reason. But here are the mp3s:

Yep, I've been away again. Obviously working on my Photoshop skills. Okay, MS Paint. But just like MS Paint, they can't keep me down! No matter how hard they try! ("They" being TV, beer and general slackitude.)

So, The Faction. Probably the most perfect Skate Rock band ever. When I think of skating in the 80's, this is the band I immediately associate it with. I was never a vert skater, but I did hang out at a ramp near my house where they would often listen to "No Hidden Messages." They provided the opening song to one of the first skate videos I ever watched, the first Powell Peralta video. And of course they featured Steve Caballero, who wasn't just some skater in a band; he was one of the best skaters in the world.

I don't think they quite get the recognition they deserve outside of the old guy skate community. Their early stuff fits right alongside the best SoCal bands like the Adolescents, Agent Orange and TSOL, but they developed an even harder edge that never went into metal territory. Maybe their lyrics were a little sillier, but they were still relatable.

Their original 80's output has been "collected" over the years, at first haphazardly on 2 CDs, and then re-released on vinyl recently on Beer City Records. But there's still a bunch missing. The Faction reunited a few times over the years and recorded a few demos. In the late 80's Jeff Kendall joined on 2nd guitar and they recorded at least 4 songs, a few featured in a skate video.

They broke up again, but reformed in the early 2000's and recorded a few more songs that I've collected here. I saw their reunion show in 2004 in San Jose and I seem to remember them selling a CDr with 4 new songs, but I held off because it was a CDr and I thought it would get a proper release eventually. I might be making that up. I think that the only post 2000 song I'm missing is "Who The Hell Do You Think You Are?" which:

1) Is a cover song from a fake band from the movie "Punk Rock Logo."
2) Was in a Thrasher video, but
3) Was never formally released.

Steve Caballero posted some artwork a few years ago that I thought was going to be part of a full Faction discography including everything they recorded and the live stuff from CBGB's at least. Perhaps I'm making that up as well. Oh well. For now, here are 6 more songs that are pretty much in the vein of their old stuff.
One post a year. Not bad eh? Sorry for my <strike>abscess</strike> absence. I've been working on my New Year's resolution of playing more Mario Bros 1-3 and developing a marijuana habit. Somehow I'm still too lazy to become a stoner.

I promise some new uploads soon. In the meantime, feast your ears on one of the best mash-ups I've heard in a long time. Or maybe it's just my love of all things Ratt.

Hey, I'm still alive! Are you? You don't have to answer that.

Sorry about the long delay, gentle readers. Since my last entry I moved back to the US, got married, trained and competed for the World's Fastest Tator Tot Eating Competition (got 5th place), had 10 babies, finished my musical adaptation of "The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again" and overhauled the tranny in my Z-Roc 524.

Okay, the first 2 are true. Now I'm just a lazy American again who never updates my blog. Until now!

And boy do I have a humdinger for ya! So anyone remember a little punk outfit out of Swansea a few years back called The Arteries? They raged it something fierce with their hard rockin' style of punk. They put out a bunch of eps, some limited 10"s and 2 albums. Dead Sea was probably their highlight with melodic hardcore vocals over bulldozer rhythms, but tempered through a pop/skate punk sensibility.

Well, it turns out these guys were hiding a couple old releases, one of which I luckily learned about and then won on "the ebay." That CD I present you is actually their 2nd release entitled "Brought Up Not Dragged Up." They have one other release that I'm still trying to track down called, I believe, "More Books, Less TV." (If anyone has this, holla at ya boy. Yeah, I'm bringing that back.)

This album isn't far off from their next offering, "Blood, Sweat And Beers," just not quite as well recorded. It's not bad at all though. 8 songs of driving punk with a touch of metal that owes from the early days of Fat Wreck and skate punk without sounding like a copycat. There's even some weird horn playing on a track or two that's, uh, interesting.

The members have since gone onto Pale Angels (meh) and Hot Mass (whee).

Well, it's February 8th of 2017, so this list is a bit overdue. As usual in part to do with my laziness. But partly because I can't be arsed (yeah, I have British friends) to come up with descriptions of a bunch of albums that I'm not sure I'll be listening to in 3 years time. Yeah, not to be a killjoy, but 2016 didn't have a huge musical impact on me. Maybe I haven't let some of the albums sink in yet, but there wasn't too much that bowled me over besides maybe 5 of the albums listed below. Wild Animals was definitely my fave of the year though. And of course I missed seeing them a couple weeks ago because I preferred getting drunk with my friends than sitting through a hardcore fest with 3 decent bands. So jaded, man.

So this year I present a list. Then I'll get back to posting way better bands from 20 years ago.

Did I mention jaded?

Through doing music reviews and living in a city with Amoeba Records for about 13 years, I accumulated literally 1 million CDs. I started to slowly weed them out through my extremely well designed Geocities site and sold maybe 1/10,000th of them. 1 of those CDs was sold to a local who sent me a CDr of her new band. I think I listened to it once and filed it in my shoebox full of promos with no artwork. Admittedly, I didn't give it much of a chance because I wasn't too keen on CDs missing more than a notch in the spine or hole punch. Call me shallow.

A few years later I started to see a band name around the Bay: This Is My Fist! Hmm, sounds familiar. When they popped up on a couple compilations I had, I realized this was the same band whose CDr I had packed away. I located the CDr again and was stoked to discover that besides being really good, it contained the 8 songs from their first 2 vinyl only releases.

I somehow never caught them live, but I managed to track down all of their material. And of course, they released everything on Bandcamp a few years ago. But I've cleaned this all up, remastering everything to the same volume, taking some of the hiss out of some releases, and adding a couple songs to the demo that aren't available on Bandcamp.

So if you've never heard This Is My Fist!, imagine Joan Jett singing for a classic Lookout! Records band. If you have heard them, you're welcome!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Probably the band I wish I had seen in their heyday the most. And unlike every (other) hardcore fossil on the internet, I consider their heyday to be their late 80's crossover years. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you've ever seen the video for "Born To Rock," that's how I imagine their shows were back then. And apparently their You Got It<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> tour was supposed to look like that, with walls of speakers and skate ramps, but the production costs were too much and that idea had to be scrapped.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Gang Green started out as a 3 piece, playing rough, fast hardcore similar to their fellow peers in the Boston Hardcore scene. At some point, the hard rock bug bit Boston (alliteration and shit!) and bands like DYS, SSD and the F.U.'s tried their own take on the sound, with mixed results. I've never been a fan of any DYS or SSD material really, but I think their rock stuff was especially bad. The F.U.'s morphed into Straw Dogs, but retained some of their later punk sound. Jerry's Kids probably pulled off the transition best, with a fast and powerful followup adding better production and more guitar solos. And The Freeze pretty much stayed constant and awesome throughout their entire career.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But Gang Green will always be my favorite of the bunch. They're basically my AC/DC, covering the essential rock themes like sex, drugs and rockin' out. But add skateboarding and a faster hardcore sound to the equation? Sign me up! It's hard to pick a favorite album of theirs. Of course "Alcohol" and "Skate To Hell" are awesome. But "Bomb" and "LDSB" from You Got It, or "Flight 911" and "Ballad" from Older...Budweiser are just as classic to me.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So I've compiled their non-album tracks here, mostly from their aforementioned heyday. I thought they were following up their 2011 7" with an eventual album, but haven't heard anything about that in a while. They recently canceled a tour of Barcelona where I was hoping to see them. I was working in Pittsburgh one time and they were supposed to play, but that show was canceled as well. I'm not sure if they're the most reliable band. I remember reading about their exploits in Thrasher a long time ago, touring with DRI and getting thrown off planes. But I like to imagine that Chris Doherty still cancels shows due to being hungover or spraining his wrist skateboarding. I'm happy just to have the music all these years.

Getting the job of your dreams, winning the lottery, your baby being born; pft! Not EVEN as joyous as an old sought after release popping up on bandcamp!

I think I already mentioned how I mail-ordered a bunch of stuff from Cargo Records, including most of the Nemesis Records catalog. Nemesis was mostly known for hardcore, but there were a few wildcards on there like Fishwife, Pitchfork, The Offspring and a band who put out a couple of my favorite 7"s: Hunger Farm.

Their music is a little hard to describe, basically an awesome mix of indie rock and punk. A description that would also suit another of my faves: Treepeople. Hunger Farm popped up on an old Flipside Records compilation in 1991 that seemed a good fit for them (and appealing to me) with bands like Big Drill Car, Monsula, Green Day and Bad Religion alongside some of Flipside's weirder roster and tastes.

I never learned much about the band, but I loved everything about their 2 7"s; cool artwork, strong vocals, weird lyics and a great rhythm section. I learned later that they were featured in an old Gullwing skate video that I still haven't seen to this day. (Not sure I'm nostalgic enough to sit through an hour and a half of that.)

They released a CD that didn't quite live up to the 7"s, but is still pretty good. But at some point I found out that they had an earlier demo with a couple of amazing songs. I got a crappy copy of it and eventually tracked down the singer of the band who sent me all their stuff on cassette. Unfortunately, he cut off the beginning of one of those awesome songs. It seemed like I would never get a quality version of that stuff. When JGoon and I talked about starting a label many years ago, a Hunger Farm discography was one of the first things I wanted to release, just so I'd have a decent copy of everything.

But in my sporadic search for them on the internet, I found that someone has put up all their old stuff on bandcamp, including the 2 demos that feature all of the songs from their 7"s. Now admittedly, the bandcamp versions of the last 2 demos still don't sound too great, but I will rip the 7"s eventually.

This demo sounds great though for a cassette transfer. I did clean it up a little, matching the volumes a little better and remastering it a tad to the volume of their album. I've been wanting a decent copy of the song "Circles" for a while and now I finally have it! If you've never heard them, that's the song to start with. It's like some kind of new wavey, post punk, dream pop punk hybrid.

The singer has some more recent solo stuff up on ReverbNation under the name Trash Martyr that's pretty good too. He sent me a CDr of songs that I'll have to dig up the next time I'm at my parents' place.

Here's an 80's album that is ripe for a reissue. You probably (should) know them by their 2nd album's hit, "Eyes Of A Stranger," also featured in the movie "Valley Girl." That song had a similar new wave/reggae vibe to The Police. And like The Police, The Payola$ started out a little more punk influenced. On this, their first album, they tread a nice mixture of new wave, '77 punk and reggae. Maybe a little closer to The Clash.

The band was from Canada, but their singer hailed from England, enhancing songs like the title track and "Jukebox" with his cheeky delivery. "Jukebox" and "China Boys" were redone from their debut 4 song ep. I actually prefer those versions since they're slightly faster, but they still sound great on this album.

I wish they had continued along this path a little more before embracing more of a pop sound. This is really a great album though, probably overlooked by punks for being too new wave and 80's fans for being kind of obscure. They seem to have released some of their later albums digitally, but this one is still out of print in any form.

Payola$ - In A Place Like This (R) (vbr 0)

Notes: So I grabbed a flac version of this from a torrent site. Thanks, Person! It's a really good rip, but quiet, so I cleaned it up a little and remastered it a bit. I also included remastered CD versions of the songs "In A Place Like This" and "China Boys" (in addition to the vinyl versions) from one of their Best Of CDs.

RIP Eric Brockman, singer/guitarist of Life Sentence. Not the inspiration I wanted, but an excuse for an overdue post.

If you were a skater, punk or zoogie (my friend's name for metalheads) in the 80's, you at least knew OF Life Sentence. Their simple logo was ubiquitous (that's right) in magazines, especially when heavy hitters like Metallica and DRI sported their t-shirts. That's about the best music promotion you could get in the 80's.

I bought (or "acquired") both of their generic looking cassettes from the Mainstream Megastore in Milwaukee. I didn't see a huge difference between the albums at the time. They were both fast and melodic, like a tighter, less posi version of early 7 Seconds. I still don't quite understand why one is lauded as a classic and the other seems mostly forgotten. Of course there was a big lineup change between albums, but that began during the recording of the first album!

The band broke off into 2 camps, both using the name Life Sentence. Eric Brockman recruited a new rhythm section and they recorded this, their second album, No Experience Necessary. Songs like "No Experience Necessary" and "Win, Lose Or Sue" are as classic to me as "Problems" and "Punks For Profit" from the first album. I guess older people and those "in the know" didn't like the cleaner recording, or picked sides in the split. I didn't know about any of that stuff at the time.

And it's been a long time since then, so hopefully the band members have some fond memories from those days. And hopefully new and old Life Sentence fans take a listen to this great album.

Notes: So this is taken from the CD version of the album. All the songs were on 1 track, but I separated all of them and remastered the album a bit.

Just kidding. Kind of.

I definitely have a lot less albums from 2015 than previous years. Maybe I'll be playing catchup in 2016, but I think it was a bit of a slow year for good music. Of course it gets harder and harder to keep up with everything and find really good stuff all the time, but I think the good stuff nowadays is mostly a rehash of older stuff. Not that it can't be reworked or perfected. But I think in 2015 I was content with revisiting a lot of old stuff and trying to get my all-time favorite stuff a little more organized.

Some stuff I still need to listen to more from this year:
Negative Self - ST (ST is right, total How Will I Laugh worship.)
Meat Wave - Delusion Moon (Not sure I get all the Hot Snakes comparisons, but I dig it.)
Meatwound - Addio (More meat, only meatier. Heavy, noisy hardcore.)
BEACH SLANG - THE THINGS WE DO TO FIND PEOPLE WHO FEEL LIKE US
Maybe if the Foo Fighters had a touch of Dave Grohl's ubiquitous punk past in their music, they'd sound something like this. This is what a rock album should sound like. Heartfelt, urgent, sentimental. But it's not a nostalgic look back at the way things were. It's a renewed hopefulness from a fellow 40 (something) year old who's grown up, but not used up.
BUSINESS MODELS - ROOM
Alright, this actually came out a few years ago, but I just found out about it recently, even though I'm a big fan of Man Without Plan. So this is basically MWP with a 2nd singer. I believe the bassist/singer and drummer were from other well known bands, but it's Barclay's signature voice and guitar licks that reeled me in.

CHRISTIAN FITNESS - LOVE LETTERS IN THE AGE OF STEAM
Andy Falkous from Mclusky and Future Of The Left goes solo-ish with this new band. As caustic and witty as ever, but maybe a little more memorable than FOTL.

CHVRCHES - EVERY OPEN EYE
I'm still not sure if I like this better than the debut. It's a little more solid, but maybe missing the hits of Bones. But with their mix of 80's, electro, keyboards and female vocals, I'm not complaining.
DAILY RITUAL - DAILY RITUAL
These punks from Singapore sound they they belong in Portland, or Southern California circa 1981. A little Observers, a little TSOL. More solid and catchy than a lot of the other bands going for this sound.

KRISTINE - KRISTINE
I liked Carly Rae Jepsen's album this year, but a synth loving Greek woman named Kristine has created an even better throwback to catchy 80's pop. I came across this singer's work on youtube and through collaborations with retro new wave instrumentalists. Put this next to your old Madonna, Bananarama and Jets albums.

NIGHT BIRDS - MUTINY AT MUSCLE BEACH
Okay, a lot of modern punk bands get a little stagnant after 3 or 4 albums, but Night Birds keep getting better and better. They achieve that classic punk sound, mixing melody, urgency and memorable music.

PLEASURE LEFTISTS - THE WOODS OF HEAVEN
This album makes me miss the goth room of the 80's night at Cat Club, which we'd frequent often in SF. Dark and dancey post punk from this female fronted band.

RADKEY - DARK BLACK MAKEUP
Somewhere between the Misfits and Naked Raygun, but less punk, more rock. Great deep vocals, driving rhythms and tons of melody.

RED DONS - THE DEAD HAND OF TRADITION
I'll probably always prefer the Observers, but the Red Dons never disappoint. I debated seeing them again the last time they were in town, but I'm so glad I did because they're just one of those bands that bring it live. And on record, more of that catchy Wipers influenced post punk.

ROYAL HEADACHE - HIGH
This album was pretty hyped up this year, and for good reason. Catchy, garage punk with a touch of mod and Motown.

SLAVES - ARE YOU SATISFIED?
Sarcastic, aggressive, pounding punk. Like a mix of Nomeansno and Blur.

TURNOVER - PERIPHERAL VISION
Somewhere between dream pop and slick 90's emo. Very lush and layered sounding, but loud enough not to put you to sleep.

WARM SODA - SYMBOLIC DREAM
These guys continue their catchy power pop sound. If there was a benefit show to save the teen center in the movie "Over The Edge," Warm Soda and Sheer Mag would be a good fit.
THE BOMB - AXIS OF AWESOME
A shame to see them go, but they've had a good run and are leaving on a high note. Great melodic punk with Jeff P's trademark vocals and whoa oh ohs!

THE KIMBERLY STEAKS - CHEMICAL IMBALANCE
More great Lookout! Records inspired poppy punk. "Ticking Over" is a jam and there's a fun cover of "I'm Into Something Good."
SUBURBAN LAWNS - SUBURBAN LAWNS
Great old new wave from this male/female fronted band. Hectic, jerky, off kilter stuff that will make you scratch and bob your head. Includes the 5 songs from their Baby EP as well.
TENEMENT - BRUISED MUSIC VOLUME ONE
Yeah, not really digging the newer direction of Tenement. I miss their old pop punk sound. Luckily there's this, a collection of their earliest (and best!) material. Maybe I'll give Predatory Headlights another chance sometime.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So one day I see an ad for a 7" by a new "supergroup" featuring members of No For An Answer, Unity and Justice League. Who are also on the same label as a recent favorite, Triggerman. And described with those 2 magic words: melodic hardcore. Money order sent off to Ringside Records!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When that first Ignite 7" arrived, it didn't leave the turntable for a while. Like a lot of OC hardcore, they had an interesting take on old school hardcore. The music carried the tradition, but there were slower, DC style moments. The lyrics were emotional and semi vague, like other bands across genres at the time. And the vocalist was the icing on the cake. Randy Johnson had previously yelled for Pushed Aside, but here his vocals were like when Dave Smalley went from DYS to Dag Nasty. A perfect fit for the band.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I eventually learned of another Ignite release on the dreaded Lost & Found Records, so I tracked that down. It contained the songs from the 7", 2 more Randy songs and 3 songs with their first singer, Joe Foster from Triggerman? What? I had no idea. His songs were really good too, but I preferred Randy's voice.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Finally they put out a full length on Conversion Records. 16 songs?! This is going to be amazing! Plunk it on the old CD player...
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">...Uh, what the fuck? Where's Randy?? Why is Luciano Pavarotti singing now???
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I guess the news of their lineup change never reached me. Call On My Brothers was a huge letdown. I can hang with Past Our Means, but an entire album of operatic hardcore is too much for me to take. Especially when I was anticipating a Can I Say for the 90's.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I've compiled all the pre Zoli stuff here. The Ash Return demo (featuring Joe Foster) was released on a split CD with X-Acto. The audio isn't the greatest, but I tried to clean it up a little more, taking out some of the hiss and balancing the volumes. I think it sounds better now.
